So, What Is IVORY?

Author : Maggie Campbell Pedersen

Of all the organic gem materials, ivory is by far the most emotive today. It is now understood that our desire for the material has cost the lives of enormous numbers of animals—and is still doing so. It should be remembered, though, that animal welfare and conservation are relatively new ideas, and that the use of ivory in times past was not therefore motivated by greed, but by admiration for a beautiful, tactile, useful and highly prized material.
